Dear Father.
Am going to write you today to let you know that I have started to work with the CR RY in the office. I do not care much for the work but it will do until I get something else which I hope will be before long. The pay is $50.00 which is not very much out here. The part I dislike most is the hours. I have to work from 10 am until 10 pm. This does not give me any time to look for something better and for that reason I may give up this before I find another position. Do not say anything to any person about what I am doing. I mean outside people at home. I have not been able to form much of an idea about this place. Some seem to be very busy and some also to have considerable means. The think I am certain about is that as far as I am concerned if I was making a good living in the East I would stay there.  The houses here are very small and mostly all wood. They rent from 40 to 75. Lots in the center of town are very dear. I saw one the other day with 25 foot frontage and 130 feet deep that they ask 5.000 for. This  to me seems far too high. In my opinion the land is too high. It has been bought  and sold so often that now the holder has to get these big prices to clear himself and I think it will damage the town by driving property away from it. Now I have some work to do here so will not write any more this time. This letter is leaving me feeling fine and hope it will find you and all the best as well. Tell Mother that I will write to her in a few days. Dr. Skinner had a letter from home and he said that you had not heard from me. Now I wrote a card to some one of you at home  every day, but one I think, and that was I think the day before yesterday. All the Newalls are well and ask for you every day almost or something about you. I am ___?

Your Son Herb

PS Have written this in a terrible hurry. Hope you will be able to make it out without too much trouble.
