Have you noticed how the British Royals are about the only people who still wear hats? In the launch issue of France's Marie-Claire Magazine, March 5th 1937, they included a two page spread about hats, feminism and royalty. Left: the hats of royalty; Right: the hats of fashionable women. 1913 shows Colette in a small hat and claims that women started to behave scandalously, smoking and dancing the tango. By 1920, woman (wearing small hats and loose clothing inspired by Chanel) were all behaving badly. After all, after the Great War there were 10 unmarried women for every one man in England and France. Women had to get a man's attentions somehow!
