A Tale of Two Wedding Gowns

Marie Claire Magazine 1937

To show how women's clothing had 'lightened up' between 1900 and 1937, Marie Claire Magazine ran a feature showing a typical bride's regalia in 1900 compared to the same in 1937. As you can see by the picture below, a 1900 bride wore about 4. 212 kilos clothing (10 lbs.) with 3 slips and corset and the gown over undershirt and knickers. The 1937 bride (not shown) wore only 2 kilos (4 pounds) and 4 layers, a girdle, a slip, an under dress and the dress. Today in 2005, the slip would suffice for some brides, and the daring might go with just the girdle. Click here for Bridal Party Pic 1911 Paris Salon de la Mode Magazine
