Excerpts from Marion Nicholson's McGill Normal School Letters 1905-06

6) the best joke was played on K. He was coming home with us when someone hid his boots. I think next time I will hide them again. Had a grand skate with Mr. Briggs. Also saw Jackie but not to speak to.

When we went to the debate the ushers knew K and what did they do but land us up in the 3rd seat from the front just behind Principal Peterson amid the cheers of all the college boys you know they think they must do that. Miss Wilson and I have an argument every night about politics but I don't know enough to get the better of her. So have to end up by saying like Aunt Flora that 'I am on the same side that John is.'

7) I told you about getting our pictures the first trial I came out fine and the rest were too ..but it did not make Ruth good looking enough so of course she had to try again and as she thought the last flattered her most had them finished. The rest don't matter of course. I look like Miss Louis in Melbourne, so you know how Nice they will be. Will send you one when they are finished.
. The work is getting harder than ever now. I don't know how I will come out in the end. There is not much more time now.

What do you think about applying to Danville or had I better go out West. Quite a lot of girls are going but I think they are after men, not to teach, unless it would be one pupil. How about coming in at Easter I don't think the board would be much and I think we would have a fine time. If either you or Edith can't come be sure and send Flora I would like to show her
the sights of the city such as McGill Normal School. CLICK We are going to make ice cream at cooking school tomorrow but the best part will be to eat it afterwards.

Had a nice time at Dr. Stewart's. Herb did not go. I don't know what to do with him. He is as slow as old Nolan sawing wood. He always says he is going some time 'soon' but his 'soons' are very few for he has not gone to Lyster's yet.

Last Sunday morning I went to Christ Church and like it fine, much better than St. Georges. Am going to church with Jim somewhere Sunday and Ruth is going with K. Don't know yet where we will go. I am afraid we are church tramps. How are Johnny Skinner and Blinkie? Now good bye and write me another nice long letter. Flora's was fine. I am going to answer it soon. With Love
Marion A Nicholson.

PS Send some money anytime soon now for I am dead broke. MAN

Let me know what train to meet you will see me waiting for you if you look out at St Lambert.

7) I am not going to make any more applications until I see if I get my diploma as things look now I am rather doubtful for our exams are most awfully hard. Today we had French and it was terrible, that Madam has no heart at all or perhaps it is a French one incapable of sympathy. Give my kindest regards to all the people and here is a X for Johnny Skinner. I don't think they believe in babies in the Montreal for we never see one and then we nearly eat them up. What is Nellie Reid's address. I have lost her letter so can't answer it. You can send in my other print dress for a change. Tell Edie that Dr. W. is standing out on the roof in the rain and for once there is no one on our verandah. Of course, I will go out as soon as I finish this letter. So you think I am fat in my picture, well if you could see me you would think I was still fatter. I can almost feel myself expanding daily and my clothes will soon cease to meet.. I have my singing exam tomorrow at 9 o'clock and hope I will do better than I did last time. He stayed over an hour one night last week explaining his old trash to me so perhaps I may be able to get through.

I have not been over to Mrs. Lyster's but I am going soon. Grace Cross sent me an invitation to a social in their church but I don't know yet if I will go I don't think so for if I go Ruthie will be all alone. I am having hard times for if I laugh Miss Gouin or somebody equally fierce pounces on us. Last night Ett and Gus Mowat were in our room and we were sharing a box of candy of Ruth's and making a little noise over it when we happened to spy Mrs. Thompson in the hall making for our door. We turned out the light - the rest got into the cupboard and left me on guard. By the time Mrs. T got to the door, all was dark and as quiet as mice so she prowled around trying to catch us but we were piled on top of each other in the cupboard for 15 minutes. Then we emerged in safety. Love Marion  For Other Letters CLICK
