The Montreal Suffrage Exhibit 1913

Suffrage was a hot issue in Montreal in the "Tighsolas" era! In a February 1913 letter, Edith says she is going to see a Mrs. Snowden speak, although she is sorry for Mrs. Snowden is 'not militant'. Later in May of that year came the Suffrage Exhibition, (below) mounted by the Montreal Council of Women in May. Carrie Derick, Council President 1909-12, founded the Montreal Suffrage Association, a militant organization around that time.  This particular clipping from Margaret's collection shows militant Barbara Wylie of England came to Montreal in September 1912 for national purposes.. The 1912 Child Welfare Exhibit, held in October, in Montreal, was sponsored by suffragists, too. Hot issue, indeed! For the SUFFRAGE MAIN PAGE CLICK Archival documents I dug out  reveal that the Suffrage Exhibition broke even.. It cost 1,039.00 and made 1,039 dollars. They made money on the tea room, auction, sale table, directory and literature; they spent on decorations, printing, advertising stationery and the gas stove.
