The Commissioners of the Transcontinental Railway
Dear Margaret,
Your letter of the 13 inst. Just received and was pleased to hear from you and to learn that you were well. I was sorry to hear of poor Mr. Cook's death. He was the last man I thought would die from the effects of liquor, but this awful liquor makes victims of all that follow it. I also note the part about Plant's cows. I would like to have seen Nathan handling Plant, it must have been quite an exhibition. I hope he will make him smart for destroying his garden. Re: the estimate of our garden at 2.00… remember when Pierce's beef cattle went through Horton's garden. He got 15.00 for it. Get two men to value the damage and hand in their bill to a lawyer and then will be no trouble to collect it. But if it only comes to two dollars, I wouldn't bother.
I have nothing new to write about, so I am using the rest of the letter for business: I am sending you my cheque to deposit to my credit and also a cheque for $50.00 for you to get when you come to Quebec and La Tuque. I will be at Levis on Tuesday, the 21st, at 4 pm if you leave Richmond on the 21st at 10:45 am you will be at Levis at 2:10pm, but you go to the Kenebec Hotel which is close to Levis station and I will find you there. If you go back by the River home just take a single fare. When we do up Quebec, then you will come to La Tuque and do up this great city. If the plans suit you, tell me by mail. When you leave Quebec, sew your money inside your corset, as likely the cars will be full of pick pockets as usual on such occasions.
Your loving husband Norman Nicholson
