Here's an auto ad aimed directly at boys from Youth's Companion November 28, 1913. The Youth's Companion was a family magazine with articles targeted at girls and boys around 10-16 or so it seems. From today's standpoint, ads targeting youth are nothing special (there are ads targeting babes, these days). But cars were a major family expense, and although prices were coming down thanks to Mr. Ford, a car could still cost the price of a good middle class home. But the advertisers knew that boys like technology and that boys would grow up to be drivers. They didn't feel the same about girls, however. Well, last year I attended a workshop for teachers given by the McCord Museum of History, which is an archive of Montreal history 1860-1940. They recently had launched a pilot history project in the high schools and all the boys chose "transportation" as a topic; all the girls "fashion." This website proves that transportation and fashion are connected in history. Click here to read about I T and T (Bell Telephone) advertising in 1910.
