Tighsolas Floor Plan as drawn by Norman. He believed the house to be in the Scottish Baronial Style. Below that, a page from Tighsolas expense booklet. Legend has it Norman inspected every tile, every brick, every two by four in the place. Below furniture purchased for new home. He certainly kept track of every expense. The Nicholsons were quite well off through the 1880's and 90's, but the hemlock 'bark' industry fell through (new trees were being used for tanning) and Norman struggled financially to the end. Tighsolas was, on one hand, their salvation, their only possession, and, on the other hand, a brick albatross around their necks, what with its huge mortgage they owed to the man next door,90 dollars interest a year, 6% on $1,500. Their neighbourhood was prestigious and is still very lovely. 1896 to 1911 was the period of Laurier's leadership and a time of great prosperity and opportunity for many.
