Robert Burns on the Rights of Women

Letter to the Editor, Montreal Witness  March 1, 1913

Margaret's Clipping

Sir,
While perusing Robert Burns works I came across a poem he wrote just one hundred and twenty years ago, in 1792, which think would prove, that Robert Burns, had he been alive now, would have likely defended the cause of the British suffragettes.

"While Europe's eyes are fixed on right things,
The fate of empires and the fall of kings,
While quacks of state much each produce his  plan,
And even Children lisp the Rights of Man,
And this mighty fuss, just let me mention,
The Rights of Women merit some attention;
But truce with Kings and truce with constitutions,
With bloody armaments and revolutions,
Let Majesty your first attention summon,
Ah. Ca ira! The Majesty of Woman.
