The Low-Paid Life of a Teacher in 1910 Quebec (without diploma) Edith Nicholson's Contract 1914 Richmond for St. Francis College
In 1908 Edith got a job in Radnor Forges for 20.00 a month. The next year she worked at Ecole Methodiste Missionary Boarding School in Westmount and made about 200 a year, and she had to pay board in a rooming house. (Read the letters.) Then she went home and took this job, perhaps until 1915 when she applied and was accepted at secretarial school in Boston. Whether she took the course or not, I don't know, but she did go to work at Sun Life Insurance and made the move to their 'famous' new digs in 1917. I believe the building, a classical construction which still stands today was the tallest in Montreal.
