"We're Hungry"

reads the caption under this photo from the Old Brewery Mission, Mountain Air Work, plea for donations from 1912. This effort was in its 7th year, the brochure says. 1,000 women and children were to be given free vacations in 1912, for $8.00 which would keep one mom and four children. No boys over 8 allowed! The camp was in Mont Chapleau.

Of course these women loved their babies. Too bad the babes' life expectancy was so short. These women worked long, long hours outside of the home, often leaving babies in the care of 'older' daughters, who were pulled out of school by fourth grade.
