Two Letters from McGill Normal School 1905/6 Marion Nicholson
YWCA 896 Dorchester St Montreal
Dear Mother, I suppose you think it is about time for me to write again but I have been so busy that I have had hardly time to breathe and I have to study all the time. My supply of candles are almost run out already I think I will have to get more when I finish mine for they are really fine to study by . I did not know that they gave so much light. Did I tell you about the roses one of the Normal girls gave me; an immense bouquet, one dozen pink roses, they were lovely I showed them to Molly L and of course she was very curious to know where they came from I would not tell her and she thinks that it was Mr Doake. and is dreadfully worried about it.
It was such a good joke for she thinks that she is THE only one who can get flowers and the like. Yesterday, Brenda and Molly Knowlton came and took me to the Matinée at His Majesty's. It was simply great. It was a comic opera and I laughed all the way through but did not quite disgrace myself. There was an old German fellow there who talked so funny and looked the same. If I could only show you some of this actions you would laugh for a week. Well, I went to the masquerade at last and had a great time. Ruth was dressed as a gypsy and looked fine. I had on a Japanese dressing gown that I got from Clare and a white scarf that belonged to Miss Bogart but I don't know how I looked only no body knew me. Miss Bogart was in a Geullemaus evening dress. Miss Buchans and Miss MacCuaig where in highland suits and Miss Fraser was in a girl's highland suit and she and Miss Guilbert danced the Highland Fling together. All the Scotch would yell 'Scotland forever' to drown the cries of the English. Then Miss Lang who was dressed in Kaki uniform danced a Sand dance. Then we had refreshments and a piece of poetry was read taking off all the girls, about our room they had " In 35 is our newest fiancee with Baby Nick who laughs all day." You see, I have got my name up for laughing. I am not going to church tonight but to bed to see if I can get good sleep for it seems like a year since I had one. I think you have better send me some money because I am dead broke. I got myself a pair of woolen gloves. Now I can't think anymore news so will close with love , Marion Annie Nicholson
April 1 1906 . Dear Mother,
I think some of you had better come in at Easter because if I go home I will not study much and time is very precious now..
So Agnes is to be married isn't that great. Who is the lucky man? I think I must hurry up and take my turn at it, if only I can find a man. Please tell anyone you see that I am a fine cook. Miss Dove says that she will give me a recommendation.
Will be glad to see you in at the graduation although I will not be among the leaders of the class. Ruth and Molly and Birdie are getting their graduating dresses made now and I guess they are going to be very fine. Saw Miss Evans not long ago and she was asking for you and wished to be remembered to you. Miss Forrester is still at me to go to prayer meetings with her. She seems to think that because you used to go with her that I must go too. Now, I must close wishing you all a very happy April Fool's. Ruth is having a friend of hers in to tea tonight. and then we will dance in the class room after the tea. You can send me some more money anytime as I am dead broke. Molly and Birdie and Ruth and I had our pictures taken. I think they will be nice although they are awfully small. Are to pay 18 cent each I wore my red dress. The rest were all in dark. Now good bye with love to all Marion Anne Nicholson. That letter was the best I have had for a long time. Please write another like it. Soon. Am teaching in the primary now and like it by far the best. The little kids are so funny. I asked one kid what was the matter with a sentence, which was badly composed and he said "t'ain't grammar."
